About the New South Wales CAV trial

The New South Wales CAV trial program is testing connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on all kinds of road conditions – including regional roads and Sydney’s busiest motorways.

The program is run in partnership by Transurban, Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services, and is the state’s most comprehensive CAV trial to date.

Testing CAVs on the Sydney Orbital Network

Transurban is playing its part in the NSW trial program. From March to September this year, we hosted trials of partially automated vehicles on our Sydney Orbital Network.

Trial data was captured via an Australian-first, purpose-built app that tracks, records and measures all interactions between CAVs and road infrastructure.

Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Tesla and Volvo supplied the cars for these trials.

The NSW Centre for Road Safety will run further trials in the future, testing vehicles with higher levels of connectivity and automation on a variety of road types and under different driving conditions.
